An Epidural Steroid Injection is a non-surgical procedure that is performed in the office to treat pain conditions. The most common conditions treated with Epidural Steroid Injections include:
Epidural Steroid Injections are not appropriate for every patient. Your New York Pain Care Doctors may recommend other non-surgical treatments such as Physical Therapy before recommending an Epidural Steroid Injection.
In preparation for an Epidural Steroid Injection for pain, Intravenous sedation may be administered and a region of the skin and tissue will be numbed with a local anesthetic. Using x-ray guidance, the physician will guide a needle into the epidural space and inject a combination of anesthetic and cortisone steroid solution. This steroid is an anti-inflammatory medication and is absorbed by the inflamed nerves to decrease swelling and relive pressure. The needle is then removed and a bandage is applied.
After the Epidural Steroid Injection is completed, the patient will be led into a recovery room in the office and be discharged shortly after. While some patients benefit greatly from just one Epidural Steroid Injection, more severe conditions may require more than one.
